In 1292 Podolinec was granted extensive town privileges — a market, its own court, and the right to run its own affairs — the reward for taking in settlers and holding a stretch of the road up the Poprad valley. King Louis I confirmed and widened those rights in 1345. For a while this was one of the more important towns of the northern Spiš, which is why it has a long sloping square and a town wall out of all proportion to the three thousand people who live here now.Roku 1292 získal Podolínec rozsiahle mestské výsady — trh, vlastný súd a právo spravovať si svoje veci — ako odmenu za to, že prijal osadníkov a strážil úsek cesty popradskou dolinou. Kráľ Ľudovít I. tieto práva roku 1345 potvrdil a rozšíril. Nejaký čas patril Podolínec k dôležitejším mestám severného Spiša, a preto má dlhé svahovité námestie a mestské hradby úplne neúmerné trom tisícom ľudí, ktorí tu dnes žijú.
