PodolinecPodolínec

The great Mongol invasion of 1241 broke the Hungarian army and swept across the kingdom, and the settlement of Spiš with German hospites — guests, invited under charters — was the answer to it. Most Slovak castles were built after 1241 because of that invasion, not destroyed by it. Podolinec is one of the few places that can name a Mongol attack of its own, and it is the second one: in 1285 a Mongol force raided back into Hungary and plundered the town. Walls followed. By the end of the century Podolinec was fortified, and stretches of that wall are still standing on the edges of the centre.
