The seventeenth century treated Podolinec badly. Plague came in 1646 and again in 1664; in 1662 the town was hit by a flood and an earthquake in the same year; the monastery burned in 1669 and a great fire went through the town in 1684. In 1659, between the disasters, the townspeople built themselves a bell tower, which still stands. These are the ordinary catastrophes of an early modern town, and they are worth knowing because they explain why so little medieval building survives anywhere in Slovakia. Usually it was not war. Usually it was fire.Sedemnáste storočie sa k Podolíncu nesprávalo pekne. Mor prišiel roku 1646 a znova roku 1664; roku 1662 zasiahla mesto povodeň a v tom istom roku aj zemetrasenie; roku 1669 zhorel kláštor a roku 1684 prešiel mestom veľký požiar. Medzi pohromami, roku 1659, si mešťania postavili zvonicu, ktorá stojí dodnes. Toto sú bežné katastrofy raného novoveku a oplatí sa ich poznať, lebo vysvetľujú, prečo sa na Slovensku zachovalo tak málo stredovekých stavieb. Zvyčajne za to nemohla vojna. Zvyčajne za to mohol oheň.
