Between 1939 and 1945 Slovakia was a satellite state of Nazi Germany. In the autumn of 1944 the front came over these ridges for the second time in thirty years, in the fighting for the Dukla and Lupków passes; villages of the upper Ondava and Laborec were burned and their people spent the winter in cellars and in the woods. Twice within one lifetime the same hills had to be rebuilt.V rokoch 1939 až 1945 bolo Slovensko satelitným štátom nacistického Nemecka. Na jeseň 1944 prešiel cez tieto hrebene front druhý raz za tridsať rokov, v bojoch o Dukliansky a Lupkovský priesmyk; dediny horného Ondavska a Laborecka horeli a ich ľudia prezimovali v pivniciach a v lese. Dva razy za jeden ľudský vek bolo treba tie isté kopce postaviť nanovo.
