Through August 1944 the field headquarters of the Assault Vehicle Regiment sat in Vranov, with its battalions in the barracks at Čemerné. They belonged to the Eastern Slovak Army, two divisions posted along the Carpathians whose secret task was to open the passes to the advancing Soviets when the Uprising began. When the Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944 the plan collapsed: German units disarmed both divisions within days, almost without a fight, and the passes stayed shut. The Red Army had to force the Dukla Pass instead, at a cost of tens of thousands of lives, and the front then stood in this district all winter. German troops burned the neighbouring village of Hencovce as they pulled back at the end of December 1944. Hanušovce, further up the valley, was freed on 19 January 1945, and Vranov, downstream and nearer the front, was taken in the same winter push.Celý august 1944 sídlilo vo Vranove veliteľstvo poľnej jednotky Pluku útočnej vozby a jeho prápory boli v kasárňach v Čemernom. Patrili k Východoslovenskej armáde — dvom divíziám rozloženým pozdĺž Karpát, ktorých tajnou úlohou bolo otvoriť priesmyky postupujúcim Sovietom, len čo vypukne povstanie. Keď 29. augusta 1944 vypuklo Slovenské národné povstanie, plán sa zrútil: nemecké jednotky obe divízie do niekoľkých dní odzbrojili takmer bez boja a priesmyky zostali zavreté. Červená armáda musela namiesto toho dobýjať Dukliansky priesmyk a zaplatila za to desaťtisícmi životov. Front potom stál v tomto okrese celú zimu. Pri ústupe koncom decembra 1944 vypálili nemeckí vojaci susedné Hencovce. Hanušovce vyššie v doline oslobodili 19. januára 1945 a Vranov, ktorý leží nižšie a bližšie k frontu, padol do sovietskych rúk v tom istom zimnom postupe.
