The castle of Čičva was built on its hill somewhere between 1309 and 1316, to guard the pass the charters call the Porta Polonica, the Polish Gate, and it became the head of an estate of more than sixty villages. We know it stood by 1316 because of what happened in it: a charter of that year rewards the castellan Mikuláš Peres with an estate for holding Čičva against an attack in which he lost his left hand, his brother Štefan was killed and three more of the garrison died with him. The town itself is named a little later, in the papal tithe register drawn up between 1332 and 1337, which lists its old church of St Stephen and its priest — also a Stephen.
