September 1914 – 1915 Burned by its own armyVypálený vlastnou armádou

In September 1914 Russian troops crossed the Dukla Pass and took much of north-eastern Slovakia, and the two Svidníks found themselves in the way. In November the retreating Austro-Hungarian units set fire to the village and to the wooden bridge over the Ondava — cutting the road not only behind the advancing Russians but in front of their own civilians, whom Hungarian field gendarmes were driving out. The people of Svidník stood in a meadow above the village and watched their houses burn; the officers reported that they had fired it for military reasons. Trenches from that winter still run across the hill called Čierna hora, a monument of 1936 below it carries the line "On Makovica and Čierna hora fell 3,428 Russian and Austrian soldiers", and about eight hundred men of that war lie in Svidník's cemeteries.V septembri 1914 prekročili ruské vojská Dukliansky priesmyk a ovládli veľkú časť severovýchodného Slovenska; oba Svidníky ležali priamo v ceste. V novembri ustupujúce rakúsko-uhorské jednotky obec aj drevený most cez Ondavu podpálili — cestu tým odrezali nielen postupujúcim Rusom, ale aj vlastným civilom, ktorých maďarskí poľní žandári hnali na evakuáciu. Svidníčania stáli na lúke nad dedinou a pozerali, ako im horia domy; velitelia do hlásení napísali, že obec zapálili z vojenských dôvodov. Zákopy z tej zimy sa dodnes tiahnu cez vrch Čierna hora, pomník z roku 1936 pod ním nesie vetu „Na Makovici a Čiernej hore padlo 3 428 ruského a rakúskeho vojska“ a na svidníckych cintorínoch leží asi osemsto vojakov tejto vojny.
