While southern Slovakia spent this century behind a fortress line against the Ottoman Empire, this corner of Šariš was three hundred kilometres away from it and was shaped by something else entirely: customs. Svidník held a branch of the thirtieth, the royal duty on goods crossing the frontier, and from the seventeenth century it grew into a small market town with the right to hold fairs. A school is recorded in 1611, and its pupils later learned from primers brought in from Russia — a reminder that the church here looked east, to Church Slavonic and the Julian calendar, not to Latin. If you are told that everything in Slovakia in this period was about the Turks, Svidník is the standing exception.Kým južné Slovensko prežívalo toto storočie za pevnostnou líniou proti Osmanskej ríši, tento kút Šariša bol od nej tristo kilometrov ďaleko a formovalo ho čosi celkom iné: clo. Vo Svidníku sídlila filiálka tridsiatkového úradu, teda kráľovského cla z tovaru prechádzajúceho cez hranicu, a od 17. storočia sa obec rozvinula na trhové mestečko s jarmočným právom. Škola sa spomína už v roku 1611 a jej žiaci sa neskôr učili zo šlabikárov dovezených z Ruska — pripomienka, že tunajšia cirkev hľadela na východ, k cirkevnej slovančine a juliánskemu kalendáru, nie k latinčine.
