After the revolution of 1848–49 the county administration was reorganised, and in 1849 Spišská Stará Ves became the seat of the Magura district — the administrative centre for the whole of Zamagurie. Serfdom had just been abolished: the Carthusians' successors stopped being lords and the townspeople stopped owing them labour. Being a district town is what kept a place this small in the business of offices, courts and schools for the next hundred and eleven years, and losing that status later mattered more than losing any building.Po revolúcii rokov 1848 – 1849 sa stoličná správa preorganizovala a roku 1849 sa Spišská Stará Ves stala sídlom Magurského okresu, správnym centrom celého Zamaguria. Poddanstvo bolo práve zrušené: nástupcovia kartuziánov prestali byť zemepánmi a mešťania im prestali dlhovať robotu. Práve postavenie okresného mesta udržalo takto malé miesto pri úradoch, súdoch a školách na ďalších stojedenásť rokov, a keď o toto postavenie neskôr prišlo, zavážilo to viac než strata ktorejkoľvek budovy.
