Slovak accounts date the town's decline from 1563. The reasons are the ordinary ones of that century: trade routes shifting, and the Ottoman wars in the south draining the kingdom's money and men even in places no Ottoman soldier ever reached. The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries here were spent in the long struggle between the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation instead. Zamagurie never had a Turkish garrison — that frontier ran three hundred kilometres to the south — but the taxes that paid for the war against it were collected here all the same.Slovenské pramene kladú začiatok úpadku mesta do roku 1563.
