In 1308 the town was laid out on German law by a šoltýs named Friedrich of Hunfalva, acting for comes Kokoš Berzeviczy: the šoltýs recruited the settlers, measured out the plots and then held the office of judge in what he had built. In 1337 the place passed to the Carthusian monks of Lechnica, the house on the Dunajec now known as Červený Kláštor, and their successors held it into the nineteenth century. In 1399 it was granted the privileges of a town — a Tuesday market, freedom from tolls and customs for its people, and the right to import, store and sell beer, wine and other drink. On a trade road along a border river, that last right was where the money was.Roku 1308 vymeral mesto na nemeckom práve šoltýs Friedrich z Hunfaloviec z poverenia komesa Kokoša Berzeviczyho: šoltýs zháňal osadníkov, vymeral role a v tom, čo postavil, potom zastával úrad richtára. Roku 1337 pripadlo mesto kartuziánom z Lechnice, kláštoru na Dunajci, ktorý dnes voláme Červený Kláštor, a ich nástupcom patrilo až do 19. storočia. Roku 1399 dostalo výsady mesta — utorkový jarmok, oslobodenie obyvateľov od cla a mýta a právo dovážať, skladovať a predávať pivo, víno a iné nápoje. Pri obchodnej ceste popri hraničnej rieke bolo práve to posledné právo tým, kde boli peniaze.
