In 1710 plague came through and killed almost the entire population of the town. It was the last great plague epidemic in the Kingdom of Hungary, and it travelled with the armies of the Rákóczi uprising. Two years later, in 1712, the town burned down completely. Between 1746 and 1760 four more fires went through it. A wooden town under shingle roofs, rebuilt after each disaster by people who had just lost everything, does not accumulate old buildings — which is why so little here looks its age.Roku 1710 prešiel mestom mor a vyhubil takmer celé obyvateľstvo. Bola to posledná veľká morová epidémia v Uhorskom kráľovstve a putovala s vojskami Rákócziho povstania. O dva roky, roku 1712, mesto celé vyhorelo. Medzi rokmi 1746 a 1760 ním prešli ďalšie štyri požiare. Drevené mesto pod šindľom, ktoré po každej pohrome stavali nanovo ľudia, čo práve prišli o všetko, staré domy nezbiera — a preto tu tak málo vecí vyzerá na svoj vek.
