The middle of the eighteenth century was the town's high point. In 1753 its inhabitants were granted the right of free movement — the right to leave, which serfs did not have — and six years' exemption from taxes. The chief landowners were the Szirmay and Aspermont families and later the Dessewffys. A description written at the end of the century calls Héthárs a market town in a pleasant spot, adorned by the lords' houses, with a hospital, annual fairs, a market place of its own and a brewhouse; little meadow, it says, but land that grew grain in plenty.
