1241 – 1270 Tarkő on its cragTarkő na brale

Hungarian county histories say the settlement here was destroyed in the Mongol invasion of 1241 and repopulated afterwards with German colonists. That is tradition rather than record, and it should be read as such. What is documented is the castle: a fortress on a limestone crag above the village of Kamenica, 725 metres up in the Čergov hills, dated to the first half of the thirteenth century, whose name appears in charters from 1270 onwards as Thorkw and Torkueley — Tarkő, the bald rock. Whoever held that rock held this valley, and for the next three hundred years the people who held it were the Tarczay family.Uhorské stoličné monografie tvrdia, že tunajšia osada zanikla pri vpáde Mongolov v roku 1241 a že ju potom znova osídlili nemeckí kolonisti. Je to skôr tradícia než doložený záznam a tak sa to má aj brať. Doložený je hrad: pevnosť na vápencovom brale nad obcou Kamenica, vo výške 725 metrov v pohorí Čergov, datovaná do prvej polovice 13. storočia, ktorej meno sa v listinách od roku 1270 objavuje ako Thorkw a Torkueley — Tarkő, teda holé bralo. Kto držal to bralo, držal aj túto dolinu, a nasledujúcich tristo rokov ho držali Tarcaiovci.
