Kežmarok became a town of the independent Slovak Republic on 1 January 1993 and got its district back in 1996. In 2008 UNESCO inscribed the wooden articular church on the World Heritage List together with the other wooden churches of the Slovak Carpathians — the little church built under rules designed to keep Protestants small is now the most protected building in the town. The castle holds the town museum, the lyceum library is open to researchers and visitors, and in high summer a European folk-craft market fills the streets for several days. For a small town, Kežmarok has kept an unusual amount of the evidence of its own past.Od 1. januára 1993 je Kežmarok mestom samostatnej Slovenskej republiky a v roku 1996 mu vrátili okres. V roku 2008 zapísalo UNESCO drevený artikulárny kostol do zoznamu svetového dedičstva spolu s ďalšími drevenými kostolmi slovenských Karpát — kostolík postavený podľa pravidiel, ktoré mali protestantov udržať v malom, je dnes najchránenejšou stavbou v meste. Na hrade sídli mestské múzeum, lyceálna knižnica je prístupná bádateľom aj návštevníkom a vrcholné leto patrí niekoľkodňovému európskemu jarmoku ľudových remesiel. Na malé mesto si Kežmarok uchoval mimoriadne veľa dôkazov o sebe samom.
