11th–13th century A crossing on the PopradBrod na Poprade

The Poprad is one of the few Slovak rivers that runs north, to the Baltic rather than the Black Sea, and the valley it cuts is the easiest way out of the Spiš into Poland. Under the early kings of Hungary several small settlements sat side by side at this crossing — a Slav village, a settlement of German-speaking craftsmen and traders, and the houses around a church of St Elizabeth. They were separate places with separate churches, and only later did they grow together into one town. Nothing here was planned: the town is where it is because the road is where it is.Poprad je jedna z mála slovenských riek, ktoré tečú na sever — do Baltského, nie do Čierneho mora — a dolina, ktorú vyhĺbila, je najpohodlnejšou cestou zo Spiša do Poľska. Za prvých uhorských kráľov ležalo pri tomto brode vedľa seba niekoľko malých osád: slovanská dedina, osada nemecky hovoriacich remeselníkov a kupcov a domy okolo kostola svätej Alžbety. Boli to samostatné sídla s vlastnými kostolmi a až neskôr zrástli do jedného mesta. Nič sa tu neplánovalo: mesto stojí tam, kde stojí, jednoducho preto, že tadiaľ vedie cesta.
