The Reformation arrived early and stuck: the German and Slovak burghers turned Lutheran in the sixteenth century and stayed that way, which mattered enormously later, when being Protestant in Habsburg Hungary became a legal disability. The Renaissance bell tower of 1591, standing free beside the medieval church and reckoned the oldest of its kind in Slovakia, is the handsomest thing left from these prosperous years. What the burghers could not stomach was the castle: a lord behind walls in the middle of their own market, claiming them as his subjects while they insisted they were the king's. The castle passed from owner to owner — the Laski family, then the Ruebers, and in 1610 Štefan Thököly bought it for thirteen thousand Hungarian florins — and in 1655 the town won its free royal status back from the emperor without getting rid of the castle at all.Reformácia prišla skoro a zapustila korene: nemeckí aj slovenskí mešťania sa v 16. storočí stali luteránmi a zostali nimi, čo malo obrovský význam neskôr, keď sa protestantstvo v habsburskom Uhorsku zmenilo na právnu prekážku. Renesančná zvonica z roku 1591, stojaca samostatne vedľa stredovekého kostola a pokladaná za najstaršiu na Slovensku, je najkrajšia pamiatka z týchto bohatých rokov. Čo mešťania nezniesli, bol hrad: pán za múrmi uprostred ich vlastného trhu, ktorý ich vyhlasoval za poddaných, kým oni trvali na tom, že patria kráľovi. Hrad striedal majiteľov — Laskovci, potom Rueberovci a v roku 1610 ho kúpil Štefan Tököli za trinásťtisíc uhorských zlatých — a mesto si v roku 1655 vydobylo od cisára späť postavenie slobodného kráľovského mesta, hoci hradu sa tým nezbavilo.
