The Lutheran lyceum made Kežmarok a school town far beyond its size; its library, grown out of the school's own collections, holds over a hundred and fifty thousand volumes and is one of the largest surviving school libraries in Central Europe. The poet Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav was among its pupils. In 1873 the Hungarian Carpathian Association, the first tourist organisation in the kingdom, was founded here, and the Tatras began to be treated as a destination rather than an obstacle. But the main railway from Košice to Bohumín ran through Poprad and not through Kežmarok, and in the last decades of the century the smaller neighbour quietly became the bigger town.
