The fighting never reached Kežmarok, but it came closer than anyone had expected: in the winter of 1914–15 the Russian army pushed at the Carpathian passes roughly a hundred kilometres east of here, and men from the Spiš were in the trenches on the Galician and Italian fronts. What the war did to the town in the end was administrative. In 1918 the Kingdom of Hungary, to which Kežmarok had belonged for nine hundred years, ceased to exist, and the town found itself in a republic that had not existed a year before.Boje sa do Kežmarku nikdy nedostali, ale prišli bližšie, než ktokoľvek čakal: v zime 1914 – 1915 sa ruská armáda tlačila na karpatské priesmyky asi sto kilometrov na východ odtiaľto a muži zo Spiša ležali v zákopoch na haličskom aj talianskom fronte. Mestu však vojna zmenila predovšetkým to, komu patrí. V roku 1918 prestalo existovať Uhorské kráľovstvo, ku ktorému Kežmarok patril deväťsto rokov, a mesto sa ocitlo v republike, ktorá rok predtým ešte nejestvovala.
