Šariš Castle is the largest castle site in Slovakia by area, and it is the rare case of a building that named a whole region: the county was called Šariš after the castle, and people still call the country around Prešov by that name. It stands on a flat-topped cone of volcanic rock above Veľký Šariš, watching the Torysa valley and the road running north toward the Polish passes. It was a royal fortress, then a county seat, then a Habsburg barracks — and then, in one afternoon in the seventeenth century, it stopped being anything at all.Šarišský hrad je rozlohou najväčšie hradné sídlo na Slovensku a zriedkavý prípad stavby, ktorá dala meno celému kraju: stolica sa podľa hradu volala Šariš a tak sa krajine okolo Prešova hovorí dodnes.

The hill made itself long before anybody built on it. It is a plug of hard volcanic rock — andesite — left standing at 570 metres when the softer ground around it wore away, and its top is broad and flat. That is rare, and it matters: most Slovak castles had to squeeze onto a narrow ridge, while here there was room to spread out. People noticed early. Archaeologists have found occupation on the summit in the Neolithic, again in the late Bronze Age between the 13th and 11th centuries BC, again from around the turn of the era down to the 4th century AD, and again in the tenth to twelfth centuries. Every one of those groups worked out the same thing about the same hill. Archeológovia doložili osídlenie vrcholu v neolite, potom v neskorej dobe bronzovej medzi 13. a 11. storočím pred naším letopočtom, ďalej od prelomu letopočtu do 4. storočia a napokon v 10. až 12. storočí. Každá z tých skupín prišla o tom istom kopci na to isté.
In 1241 the Mongol army broke into the Kingdom of Hungary and beat the royal host in a single battle. King Béla IV drew one lesson from it: earth ramparts and wooden forts were worthless, stone walls on high ground were not, and he spent the rest of his reign pushing his lords to build them. Šariš belongs to that programme. The stone castle went up in the 13th century, and the first written mention of it is from 1245, where it appears as castrum Sarus. It was a royal castle from the start, not a private one, and its job was to hold the trade road that ran up the Torysa toward the Carpathian passes. Do not let anyone tell you the Mongols destroyed it; it did not exist yet.V roku 1241 vpadla do Uhorského kráľovstva mongolská armáda a v jedinej bitke rozdrvila kráľovské vojsko. Šarišský hrad patrí do tohto programu.
In the 1240s a new county was organised around the castle and named after it. The king's officer — the comes, the count, who collected royal revenue and judged in the king's name — sat up here, so this hill was where Šariš was governed from. Then royal authority collapsed. Around 1300 the castle was seized by the Omodej branch of the Aba family, magnates who ran eastern Hungary almost as a private kingdom; they enlarged the place, adding living quarters and workshops and strengthening the walls. Their power ended at the Battle of Rozhanovce in 1312, when King Charles Robert beat them near Košice and took their castles back. A charter of that same year names it castrum de Saarus.V 40. rokoch 13. storočia vznikla okolo hradu nová stolica a dostala po ňom meno.
In 1405 King Sigismund granted the castle to Peter Perényi, and it later passed to the Szóósy family. Then came the long confusion after King Albert died leaving an infant heir. Ján Jiskra of Brandýs, a Bohemian captain hired to hold the east for the child king, took Šariš and kept it with his garrisons from 1441 to 1460 — for nearly twenty years the castle that governed the county answered to a mercenary commander, not to a king. It was too strong to storm: a siege against it failed. In the end King Matthias Corvinus got it back the way such things were usually settled, by negotiating and paying rather than fighting.V roku 1405 daroval kráľ Žigmund hrad Petrovi Perényimu a neskôr prešiel na rod Szóósyovcov.
After the Ottomans destroyed the Hungarian army at Mohács in 1526 the kingdom split between two claimants: Ferdinand of Habsburg and John Zápolya. Every castle in the country had to pick a side, and the Perényis, who held Šariš, picked Zápolya — on 4 December 1536 they took Košice for him. The imperial answer came the next year: in 1537 Ferdinand's troops besieged Šariš and captured it. From then on it was a military post rather than a lord's home. It held a garrison of roughly two hundred infantry with magazines of weapons, and it was rebuilt for gunpowder warfare — fourteen bastions built into the line of the walls, shaped so cannon could be worked from them. Každý hrad v krajine si musel vybrať stranu a Perényiovci, ktorí Šariš držali, si vybrali Zápoľského — 4. decembra 1536 preňho obsadili Košice. Cisárska odpoveď prišla o rok: v roku 1537 Ferdinandove vojská hrad obliehali a dobyli.
In 1642 the Rákóczi family, the great Protestant magnates of eastern Hungary, acquired the castle — and promptly built themselves a manor house at the foot of the hill and lived in that instead. It is a small detail that tells you everything about the century: castles had become cold, cramped and pointless to live in, and were worth keeping only if there was going to be a war. Šariš, unusually for this region, took no real part in the anti-Habsburg risings that filled the rest of the 1600s. What ended its usefulness was an accident. In 1660 the gunpowder magazine exploded and wrecked a large part of the castle. After that it was used to house soldiers and for nothing else.V roku 1642 hrad získali Rákócziovci, veľkí protestantskí magnáti východného Uhorska — a hneď si pod kopcom postavili kaštieľ a bývali radšej v ňom. V roku 1660 vybuchla prachárňa a veľkú časť hradu rozmetala. Odvtedy slúžil už len na ubytovanie vojakov.
The castle's working life ended in fire, and here is a good lesson in how history actually works: the sources do not agree on the details. The version told locally, and on the rest of this site, is that in 1687 lightning struck the powder store and the explosion finished what was left. Other accounts put the powder explosion in 1660 and record a separate fire in 1687; one reference work dates the fire to 1678 instead. Nobody disputes the outcome. It was never rebuilt, because with artillery as it now was there was no military reason to. The county's business moved six kilometres down the valley to Prešov — which is why Prešov, and not Veľký Šariš, is the regional capital today. The village below carried away the stone for its houses, as villages always did, and the hill went back to forest. Ownership passed by marriage to the Aspermonts and later the Szirmays, and the last private owner was Géza Pulszky.Činný život hradu sa skončil požiarom — a je to pekná lekcia o tom, ako história naozaj funguje, lebo pramene sa v podrobnostiach nezhodujú. Iné výklady kladú výbuch prachárne do roku 1660 a v roku 1687 uvádzajú samostatný požiar; jedna príručka datuje požiar dokonca do roku 1678.
The ruin was given legal protection twice, for two different reasons. In 1963 it was declared a national cultural monument, and in 1964 the hill around it became a national nature reserve — the volcanic rock and the forest on it are protected as well as the walls. That double protection had an unglamorous but enormous effect: nothing could be built here, and nothing was. The complete ground plan of a very large medieval castle survived under the turf, undisturbed, which is more than can be said for most castles that stayed in use.Zrúcanina získala právnu ochranu dvakrát a z dvoch rôznych dôvodov.
Since Slovakia became independent the ruin has been worked on by volunteers rather than rebuilt by the state, and the philosophy is deliberate: stabilise what is standing, do not invent what is gone. Loose masonry is reset, wall crowns are capped so water cannot get in, and the scrub is cut back, season by season — so the site genuinely looks different from one year to the next. There is no ticket desk, no roof and no marked route. An asphalt track climbs from Veľký Šariš and doubles as an educational trail, and the summit is open to anyone who walks up. The built area is more than 2.7 hectares: walking the perimeter takes real minutes, not seconds, and that is the single best way to understand how big this place was.
