The castle's working life ended in fire, and here is a good lesson in how history actually works: the sources do not agree on the details. The version told locally, and on the rest of this site, is that in 1687 lightning struck the powder store and the explosion finished what was left. Other accounts put the powder explosion in 1660 and record a separate fire in 1687; one reference work dates the fire to 1678 instead. Nobody disputes the outcome. It was never rebuilt, because with artillery as it now was there was no military reason to. The county's business moved six kilometres down the valley to Prešov — which is why Prešov, and not Veľký Šariš, is the regional capital today. The village below carried away the stone for its houses, as villages always did, and the hill went back to forest. Správa stolice sa presťahovala šesť kilometrov dolu údolím do Prešova — a preto je dnes krajským mestom Prešov, a nie Veľký Šariš. Dedina pod kopcom si kameň odniesla na svoje domy, ako to dediny robievali, a vrch zarástol lesom. Majetok prešiel sobášmi na Aspermontovcov a neskôr na Szirmayovcov; posledným súkromným vlastníkom bol Géza Pulszky.
