Most great castles in this country were ended deliberately: besieged, slighted by imperial order, or simply abandoned once cannon made them useless. Šariš was ended by an accident. In 1687, with the castle still garrisoned in the unsettled years of the anti-Habsburg risings, the gunpowder magazine exploded.Väčšinu veľkých hradov v tejto krajine ukončil zámer: obliehanie, cisársky rozkaz na zbúranie alebo jednoducho opustenie, keď ich delá zbavili zmyslu. Whatever lit it, the result is not in doubt: the blast wrecked the heart of the castle, the fire finished what the explosion started, and the fortress that had held the county for four hundred years was written off in an afternoon. The village below took the stone, as villages always did, and the hill went back to forest. What saved Šariš in the end was neglect: nothing was built over it, so the whole plan of a very large medieval castle survives under the turf, and the volunteers who work here now are uncovering and stabilising rather than reconstructing.Dedina pod kopcom si odniesla kameň, ako to dediny robievali, a kopec zarástol lesom.
