Be honest about this one before you go: Šariš is not a museum and it is not a restored castle. It is an archaeological landscape — enormous, atmospheric and almost entirely roofless. In places the walls still rise well above head height; in many others the plan survives only as low banks of masonry in the grass, and you read the castle with your feet rather than your eyes.Povedzme si to na rovinu ešte pred cestou: Šariš nie je múzeum ani obnovený hrad. Je to archeologická krajina — obrovská, pôsobivá a takmer celkom bez striech. Miestami hradby stále siahajú vysoko nad hlavu; na mnohých iných sa pôdorys zachoval len ako nízke murované valy v tráve a hrad čítate skôr nohami než očami.
The walk up starts in Veľký Šariš and takes roughly forty minutes to an hour on a marked forest path — a proper hill walk, steep in stretches, with tree roots and loose stone underfoot rather than steps. There is no vehicle access and no shortcut. Then the trees thin, the ground levels, and you come out onto the summit plateau through a gap that was once a gate.Výstup sa začína vo Veľkom Šariši a po značenom lesnom chodníku trvá zhruba štyridsať minút až hodinu — poriadna kopcová túra, miestami strmá, s koreňmi a voľným kamením pod nohami namiesto schodov. Nijaký prístup autom, nijaká skratka. Potom sa stromy prerednú, terén sa zrovná a na temennú plošinu vyjdete medzerou, ktorá bola kedysi bránou.
Up top it is the space that surprises people. You can walk for several minutes in a straight line and still be inside the castle. Consolidation work by volunteers has stabilised the standing fragments and opened up the circuit, so the perimeter can be followed most of the way round, with the ground dropping away on every side to the Torysa valley, the city of Prešov to the south-east, and the long wooded ridges of the Čergov and the Slanské hills on the horizon.Hore ľudí najviac prekvapí priestor. Môžete ísť niekoľko minút rovno a stále budete vnútri hradu. Konzervačné práce dobrovoľníkov spevnili stojace fragmenty a otvorili okruh, takže obvod sa dá takmer celý obísť, pričom terén na všetky strany spadá do údolia Torysy, na juhovýchod k Prešovu a na obzore k dlhým zalesneným hrebeňom Čergova a Slanských vrchov.
