Štítnik today has fewer than fifteen hundred inhabitants looking after a monument of European importance. The church belongs to a small Lutheran congregation, is normally locked, and is opened by a keyholder from the village or through the parish — the marked Gothic Route through these valleys exists precisely because the churches on it cannot be kept open all day. Telephone ahead and you see one of the great painted interiors of central Europe; arrive unannounced and you see a door.
