In September 1893 a company was formed to build a railway up the Štítnik valley, and on 13 November 1894 the first train ran on the finished line. It was standard gauge and it was built for freight: it climbed from the junction at Plešivec through Štítnik to the paper mill at Slavošovce at the head of the valley. For decades afterwards the valley's timber, paper and stone went out that way, and its people came and went with them. A branch line looks like a small thing until it is taken away.V septembri 1893 vznikla účastinná spoločnosť, ktorá mala postaviť železnicu do Štítnickej doliny, a 13. novembra 1894 prešiel po hotovej trati prvý vlak. Bola s normálnym rozchodom a stavala sa pre nákladnú dopravu: od odbočky v Plešivci stúpala cez Štítnik k papierni v Slavošovciach na konci doliny. Desaťročia potom odchádzalo touto cestou drevo, papier a kameň z doliny a spolu s nimi cestovali aj ľudia. Vlečka vyzerá ako malá vec — kým vám ju nevezmú.
