At the end of 2008 the Siderit company at Nižná Slaná, which mined and roasted the local siderite iron ore, went bankrupt under its debts — and with it went the nearest large employer in the valley. The Rožňava district has carried some of the highest unemployment in Slovakia ever since, and the upland villages are the thin end of it. Kobeliarovo today is a few hundred people, one street along the stream, a good many empty houses, the early Gothic church above them and the 1795 parsonage with its plaque. There is no museum with a car park; like most things in these villages, the memorial is opened on request rather than to a timetable. What the place offers is the scale of the starting point — how small and how poor a parish could be, and still send out the man who founded Slavic studies.Koncom roka 2008 skončil pod ťarchou dlhov v konkurze podnik Siderit v Nižnej Slanej, ktorý ťažil a pražil tunajšiu železnú rudu — a s ním zmizol najbližší veľký zamestnávateľ v doline. Rožňavský okres odvtedy patrí k okresom s najvyššou nezamestnanosťou na Slovensku a horské obce sú jeho najtenším koncom. Kobeliarovo je dnes pár stoviek ľudí, jedna ulica popri potoku, dosť prázdnych domov, nad nimi ranogotický kostol a fara z roku 1795 s pamätnou tabuľou. Múzeum s parkoviskom tu nenájdete; ako väčšina vecí v týchto dedinách sa aj pamätník otvára na požiadanie, nie podľa otváracích hodín. To, čo tu je, je mierka toho začiatku — aká malá a aká chudobná mohla byť fara, z ktorej vyšiel zakladateľ vedeckej slavistiky.
