A census in 1828 counted 54 houses and 436 people at Kobeliarovo. In those same decades the boy from the parsonage was in Prague, where he had settled in 1833, writing Slovanské starožitnosti (Slavic Antiquities, 1837) and Slovanský národopis (1842) — the first serious attempt to give the Slavs a documented history and a map of themselves, written directly against a German scholarship that treated them as barbarians. There is an awkward part that belongs in the story: he wrote in German and in Czech, because Czech patriots paid him a yearly allowance on the explicit condition, as František Palacký put it, that from then on he would write only in Czech. In 1846 he criticised Ľudovít Štúr for making a written Slovak language at all — while insisting, unlike his Czech friends, that the Slovaks were a nation of their own. He became director of the Prague University Library in 1848 and died there in 1861, after years of illness and deep depression.Súpis obyvateľstva z roku 1828 napočítal v Kobeliarove 54 domov a 436 ľudí. Roku 1848 sa stal riaditeľom pražskej univerzitnej knižnice a v roku 1861 tam po rokoch choroby a ťažkých depresií zomrel.
