19th century – 1914 · census of 1910 The sulphur spaSírne kúpele

North of the town, at the foot of the Vihorlat, sulphur springs were developed into a bathing resort — the Sobranecké kúpele. In the age when going to the baths was what the middle classes did with a summer, that spa was the one thing that brought outsiders to this district. The census of 1910 counted 538 Hungarians and 577 Slovaks in the town: a small, mixed border town, in other words, of the kind this frontier was full of. The spa's best years ended with the First World War, and after a broken century of closures and half-restarts the buildings today stand largely abandoned.Severne od mesta, na úpätí Vihorlatu, vybudovali pri sírnych prameňoch kúpele — Sobranecké kúpele. V časoch, keď meštianstvo trávilo leto v kúpeľoch, boli jediným, čo do tohto okresu privádzalo cudzích. Sčítanie roku 1910 napočítalo v meste 538 Maďarov a 577 Slovákov: bolo to teda malé zmiešané pohraničné mestečko, akých bolo na tejto hranici plno. Najlepšie roky kúpeľov sa skončili s prvou svetovou vojnou a po prerušovanom storočí zatvárania a polovičatých pokusov o obnovu dnes budovy väčšinou chátrajú opustené.
