Sobrance sits at the foot of the Vihorlat, where the volcanic hills drop to the East Slovak Lowland, about thirty kilometres east of Michalovce. The storyHistória
Sobrance belonged to Ung county, whose seat was Ungvár — today Uzhhorod, across the border in Ukraine. That is the simplest explanation of the town's history: for most of it the natural regional centre lay to the east, and the frontier that now separates the two is a line drawn in the twentieth century.Sobrance patrili do Užskej stolice, ktorej sídlom bol Ungvár — dnešný Užhorod za hranicou na Ukrajine. The town is documented from the Middle Ages as a market settlement and stayed small. Its one nineteenth-century distinction was a sulphur spa on the edge of town, which drew visitors when spa-going was in fashion; its fortunes have been mixed since, and its operation should not be taken for granted.Mesto je doložené od stredoveku ako trhová osada a zostalo malé. The east has been a corridor for armies as much as for trade. The First World War reached the Carpathian passes north of here, the region was fought over again in 1944, and since 2022 the crossing east of the town has carried a great deal of traffic to and from Ukraine.Východ bol rovnakou mierou koridorom vojsk aj obchodu. The town itself is a small district seat with a church, a square and offices; the reasons to come are in its district. Morské oko, a volcanic lake held in the forest of the Vihorlat above Remetské Hámre, is the best known — a walk in from the road, no building on the shore, beech woods all round.Samotné mesto je malým okresným sídlom s kostolom, námestím a úradmi; dôvody prísť ležia v jeho okrese. Work and industryPráca a priemysel
Agriculture and forestry are the base — cereals and oilseed on the plain, timber in the Vihorlat — with food processing, small workshops and the services a border generates: haulage, customs work and the trade that follows a busy crossing. Sobrance is not on a main railway; buses from Michalovce and Košice are the practical way in.
