This corner belonged to Ung county, one of the counties the Kingdom of Hungary organised along the Carpathian foothills, with its seat at the castle of Ungvár — the city now called Uzhhorod, in Ukraine. For nine hundred years everything official about Sobrance happened there: taxes, courts, records, the big markets. The Vihorlat behind the town was the county's forest and its northern wall, and the passes beyond it led on into Poland and Galicia.
