In March 1241 the main Mongol army under Batu Khan forced the Verecke pass in the Carpathians, north-east of Ung, and came down into the upper Tisza plain. This district lay on that road. There was no stone castle anywhere near to slow the army down, and villages on an open lowland had nowhere to go. The kingdom's answer, once Béla IV returned from exile, was a programme of stone castle building that gave Slovakia most of the castles it still has. But those castles needed defensible rock, and around Sobrance there is none — which is why this district has no great fortress and never did.V marci 1241 prerazilo hlavné mongolské vojsko pod vedením Batuchána Verecký priesmyk v Karpatoch severovýchodne od Užskej stolice a zostúpilo do hornej roviny pri Tise.
