The anti-Habsburg risings had their heartland here. The rebels were called kuruc; Imre Thököly's revolt in the 1670s and 1680s and then Francis II Rákóczi's war of 1703–1711 both drew their soldiers out of Ung, Zemplín and Šariš, and both were fought across this ground. Rákóczi's uprising began in 1703 in the country just east and south of here, and for eight years the whole east was outside the emperor's control. The peace of Szatmár in 1711 ended it. The Habsburgs then made certain the eastern counties would never be able to raise an army of their own again, which is one reason this corner stayed poor and quiet for the next two centuries.
