Independent Slovakia inherited a district with high unemployment and nothing ready to replace mining, and Rožňava has spent thirty years looking for one. Light manufacturing, wood and food processing, quarrying and forestry cover part of it; the rest is public services and work abroad. The one genuinely local growth industry is the same ground as before, seen from above instead of from below: the caves of the Slovak Karst, the Andrássy houses at Betliar and Krásna Hôrka, the plateaus and the gorges. For a town that spent seven centuries valuing limestone only for what could be dug out of it, that is a strange reversal.Samostatné Slovensko zdedilo okres s vysokou nezamestnanosťou a bez pripravenej náhrady za baníctvo a Rožňava ju hľadá tridsať rokov. Časť pokrýva ľahká výroba, drevárstvo a potravinárstvo, lomy a lesníctvo; zvyšok verejné služby a práca v zahraničí. Jediné naozaj domáce rastúce odvetvie je tá istá zem ako predtým, len videná zhora namiesto zdola: jaskyne Slovenského krasu, andrássyovské sídla v Betliari a na Krásnej Hôrke, planiny a tiesňavy. Pre mesto, ktoré sedem storočí videlo vo vápenci len to, čo sa z neho dá vykopať, je to zvláštny obrat.
