History of RožňavaDejiny — Rožňava

Rožňava exists because of what lies under the ground around it — gold and silver first, then copper and iron — and it spent seven hundred years living off that, being taxed for it, and finally losing it. It has been a bishop's seat since 1776 and a mining town for far longer, sitting in a basin between the ore-bearing ridges of the Slovak Ore Mountains and the bare limestone tables of the Slovak Karst.Rožňava vznikla kvôli tomu, čo je pod zemou navôkol — najprv zlato a striebro, neskôr meď a železo — a sedemsto rokov z toho žila, platila z toho dane a nakoniec o to prišla.

  1. around 1200okolo roku 1200 Miners in the valleys before there was a townBaníci v dolinách skôr ako mesto

Long before anybody wrote the name Rožňava down, people were already digging here. Archaeological finds show the valleys of the upper Slaná were thickly settled by miners by about 1200, working ore that lay close to the surface in the Slovak Ore Mountains. The Kingdom of Hungary needed metal — for coin, for weapons, for tools — so the crown encouraged German-speaking settlers, called hospites or 'guests', to come and open seams that local farmers had neither the skill nor the tools to reach. The town that turns up in the records later is the settlement those miners built.Dávno predtým, než niekto meno Rožňava zapísal, sa tu už kopalo.

  2. 1241–12431241 – 1243 The invasion, and what the king did nextVpád a to, čo kráľ urobil potom

In the spring of 1241 a Mongol army destroyed the Hungarian king's forces at Muhi, two days' ride south of here, and then rode through the kingdom burning what it found. Gemer was open country of wooden manors with almost no stone defences, and it suffered. What matters for this district is what happened afterwards: King Béla IV concluded that the kingdom needed stone castles and dense, defensible settlement, and began granting land and building rights on condition that the holder fortify what he was given. Two years after the invasion the charters that first name Plešivec, Štítnik and Ochtiná were issued under exactly that policy — so most of what you can visit in Gemer is a consequence of 1241 rather than a victim of it.Na jar 1241 rozdrvilo mongolské vojsko uhorské kráľovské sily pri Muhi, dva dni jazdy južne odtiaľto, a potom prešlo krajinou a pálilo, na čo prišlo.

  3. 1291–14101291 – 1410 First written down in 1291Prvý zápis z roku 1291

Rožňava's first written mention is a royal donation charter of 1291 — a document about who owned the place, not about when people came to it. The archbishops of Esztergom became its lords, which is why a mining town this far east ended up with such a heavy church presence. The oldest building in the town is the parish church of 1304, the one that is a cathedral today. By tradition King Louis the Great granted Rožňava its first town privileges in 1382, and in 1410 it gained the standing of a free royal town, with its own court, its own market and its own guilds. Podľa tradície udelil Rožňave prvé mestské výsady kráľ Ľudovít Veľký v roku 1382 a v roku 1410 získalo mesto postavenie slobodného kráľovského mesta s vlastným súdom, vlastným trhom a vlastnými cechmi.

  4. 1440s–1460sštyridsiate až šesťdesiate roky 15. storočia Jiskra's countryJiskrova krajina

When King Albert died in 1439 leaving a newborn heir, the queen hired the Czech captain Ján Jiskra of Brandýs to hold the mining towns of upper Hungary for her son. For roughly twenty years his garrisons — Czech and Slovak soldiers, many of them veterans of the Hussite wars — were the real power across Gemer and Spiš, and the mining towns paid them to be it. When Jiskra's service ended, bands of unpaid soldiers called the bratríci, the 'little brethren', stayed on and lived off the country until King Matthias Corvinus broke them in the 1460s. Nobody in Gemer grew rich in these decades and the output of the mines fell.Keď v roku 1439 zomrel kráľ Albrecht a zanechal len práve narodeného dediča, kráľovná najala českého kapitána Jána Jiskru z Brandýsa, aby jej synovi udržal banské mestá horného Uhorska. V Gemeri v tých desaťročiach nezbohatol nikto a ťažba klesla.

  5. 1554–16861554 – 1686 Taxed by two masters at onceDane dvom pánom naraz

After the Hungarian army was destroyed at Mohács in 1526 the kingdom split three ways and the Ottoman frontier crept north. The castle of Fiľakovo fell in 1554 and became the seat of an Ottoman sanjak, a military district, and from then until 1686 Rožňava spent most of its time inside the zone the Turks taxed — in their records the town is Rojna. It was not garrisoned by janissaries the way a frontier fortress was; it paid, and it went on paying the Habsburg king as well, because a town that refused either one could be burned by the other. Mining fell away badly in these years and the district's ore trade only really recovered around 1800.Po zničení uhorského vojska pri Moháči v roku 1526 sa krajina rozpadla na tri časti a osmanská hranica sa posúvala na sever.

  6. 1643–17071643 – 1707 The watchtower, and Rákóczi governing from the squareStrážna veža a Rákóczi vládnuci z námestia

The tower standing free in the middle of Rožňava's square was built between 1643 and 1654, and it explains the century better than any document: a lookout and fire tower, put up by a town that expected to see trouble coming. Trouble came from both directions. Hungarian accounts record a defeat for Imre Thököly's anti-Habsburg rebels at Rožňava on 15 February 1685, and twenty years later the town lay deep inside the territory held by Francis II Rákóczi, whose uprising of 1703–11 was the last great revolt of the Hungarian estates against Vienna. Rákóczi governed from Rožňava in 1706, and it was here on 22 January 1707 that the decision was taken to summon the Diet of Ónod — the assembly that would declare the Habsburgs deposed. A prichádzalo z oboch strán.

  7. 17761776 Maria Theresa makes it a bishop's seatMária Terézia z nej robí biskupské sídlo

In 1776 the empress Maria Theresa had a new Roman Catholic diocese carved out for Rožňava, and the town gained a second identity almost overnight. A bishop needs a palace, a seminary needs teachers and a cathedral needs music and books, so the parish church of 1304 was raised to cathedral rank and the square filled up with institutions. The schools that came with the diocese mattered more than the ceremonies: for the next century and a half Rožňava was where the sons of Gemer went to be educated, whatever their families did for a living. The cathedral also holds the town's finest medieval object — the Metercia altar panel of 1513, a painting of St Anne with the Virgin and Child in whose background miners wash and haul ore, one of the earliest pictures of mining anywhere in Europe.V roku 1776 dala cisárovná Mária Terézia pre Rožňavu vyčleniť nové rímskokatolícke biskupstvo a mesto takmer zo dňa na deň získalo druhú tvár.

  8. 1848–18491848 – 1849 Serfdom ends, and a Gemer boy gives the Slavs a historyKoniec poddanstva a Gemerčan, ktorý dal Slovanom dejiny

The Hungarian revolution of 1848 abolished serfdom. In a mining town that changed less than you would expect — the miners were wage workers already — but it changed everything for the villages that fed the town. The same generation asked for the first time, in an organised way, what language a school or a court should use, and in Gemer there was no comfortable answer: the towns spoke largely Hungarian, the villages around them Slovak. One local answer became famous far beyond the county. Pavol Jozef Šafárik, born in 1795 at Kobeliarovo a few valleys north of here and schooled for a time in Rožňava, spent his life demonstrating that the Slavs had a documented history of their own, and his work is one of the foundations of the Slovak national movement.

  9. 1867–19141867 – 1914 Rails, furnaces and the pressure to be HungarianKoľajnice, pece a tlak byť Maďarom

After 1867 the Kingdom of Hungary ran its own internal affairs, and it used that freedom both to industrialise and to Magyarise. Railways came up the Slaná valley and turned Rožňava from a market town into a shipping point for ore, while modern coke-fired ironworks elsewhere slowly killed the small charcoal hammer mills that had made Gemer's iron for six hundred years. At the same time school laws pushed Hungarian as the language of instruction, so a Slovak-speaking village child who wanted a secondary education in Rožňava got one in Hungarian. Both processes explain why this district's twentieth century opens with a national argument nobody had settled. Do doliny Slanej prišla železnica a z Rožňavy urobila namiesto trhového mestečka prekladisko rudy, kým moderné koksové železiarne inde pomaly udúšali malé drevouhoľné hámre, ktoré robili gemerské železo šesťsto rokov.

  10. 1914–19181914 – 1918 The ore goes to the warRuda ide na vojnu

Gemer's men were called up into Austro-Hungarian regiments and sent mostly to the Russian front in Galicia, later to the Italian front on the Isonzo. The ore and iron of the district were switched to war production, which meant work but also requisitioning, shortages and hunger at home. By the autumn of 1918 the empire that had governed this valley for four hundred years no longer existed, and nobody in Rožňava had been asked what should replace it.Gemerských mužov odviedli do rakúsko-uhorských plukov a poslali väčšinou na ruský front do Haliče, neskôr na taliansky front na Soči.

  11. 1918–19381918 – 1938 A Hungarian-speaking town in a new stateMaďarsky hovoriace mesto v novom štáte

Czechoslovakia was declared in October 1918 and its troops occupied Gemer over the following months, but the border was not agreed — it was fought over. In the summer of 1919 the northern campaign of the Hungarian Red Army swept back through this region and held the towns for some weeks before withdrawing under Allied pressure. Rožňava then spent twenty years as a largely Hungarian-speaking town inside a Slovak-speaking state: Slovak schools and Slovak officials arrived, and the statue of Kossuth came down off the square. The census of 1930 counted 6,668 people in the town, of more than one language and more than one faith, and the arrangement worked well enough from day to day without ever being accepted by everybody.V októbri 1918 vzniklo Československo a jeho vojsko obsadilo Gemer v nasledujúcich mesiacoch, hranica sa však nedohodla — bojovalo sa o ňu. V lete 1919 sa severnou výpravou maďarskej Červenej armády vrátil do kraja front a mestá zostali niekoľko týždňov v jej rukách, kým sa pod tlakom dohodových mocností nestiahla. Rožňava potom prežila dvadsať rokov ako prevažne maďarsky hovoriace mesto v slovensky hovoriacom štáte: prišli slovenské školy a slovenskí úradníci a Kossuthova socha z námestia zmizla. Sčítanie v roku 1930 napočítalo v meste 6 668 obyvateľov viacerých jazykov a viacerých vierovyznaní; každodenne to fungovalo, prijaté to však nebolo všetkými.

  12. 2–8 November 19382. – 8. novembra 1938 Hungary again, by arbitrationZnova Maďarsko, tentoraz arbitrážou

By the First Vienna Award of 2 November 1938 — a decision handed down by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, not a negotiated treaty — southern Slovakia was given to Hungary, and the new line ran along Rimavská Sobota – Jelšava – Rožňava – Košice. Hungarian troops entered Rožňava on 8 November 1938 in front of a crowd of several thousand, under triumphal arches, and the Kossuth statue went back up the following summer. For much of the town this was a homecoming and it was celebrated as one. It was also part of the same process that had dismembered Czechoslovakia at Munich five weeks earlier and destroyed the state altogether in March 1939.Prvou viedenskou arbitrážou z 2. novembra 1938 — rozhodnutím nacistického Nemecka a fašistického Talianska, nie vyjednanou zmluvou — pripadol juh Slovenska Maďarsku a nová hranica viedla po línii Rimavská Sobota – Jelšava – Rožňava – Košice.

  14. 1948–19891948 – 1989 The last great age of the minesPosledný veľký vek baní

The communist state nationalised the mines and then invested heavily in them, because a planned economy that wanted steel needed ore. Iron ore was worked in the valleys around Rožňava on a scale the town had not seen before, blocks of flats went up for the workforce, and the district's entire economy was tied to one industry. The mining museum in the town keeps the lamps, tools and mine maps from those decades, and it is worth understanding that it is not a curiosity: for seven hundred years there was very little else here to live on. What nobody planned for was what would happen when the ore stopped paying. Banícke múzeum v meste uchováva lampy, náradie a banské mapy z tých desaťročí — a nie je to kuriozita: sedemsto rokov tu takmer nebolo z čoho iného žiť. S čím sa v pláne nerátalo, bolo to, čo príde, keď sa ruda prestane vyplácať.

  15. November 1989november 1989 The system goes, and the mines followOdchádza režim a za ním bane

The Velvet Revolution of November 1989 reached Rožňava as it reached every district town — meetings on the square, a strike committee, a change of officials — and it was over quickly and without violence. What followed here was harder than the politics. Ore that had been mined because a plan said so could not survive being priced on a world market, and through the 1990s one pit after another in the valleys closed. Freedom arrived at precisely the moment the work left.

  16. since 1993od roku 1993 Living on the karst instead of under itŽivot na krase namiesto pod ním

Independent Slovakia inherited a district with high unemployment and nothing ready to replace mining, and Rožňava has spent thirty years looking for one. Light manufacturing, wood and food processing, quarrying and forestry cover part of it; the rest is public services and work abroad. The one genuinely local growth industry is the same ground as before, seen from above instead of from below: the caves of the Slovak Karst, the Andrássy houses at Betliar and Krásna Hôrka, the plateaus and the gorges. For a town that spent seven centuries valuing limestone only for what could be dug out of it, that is a strange reversal.Samostatné Slovensko zdedilo okres s vysokou nezamestnanosťou a bez pripravenej náhrady za baníctvo a Rožňava ju hľadá tridsať rokov. Časť pokrýva ľahká výroba, drevárstvo a potravinárstvo, lomy a lesníctvo; zvyšok verejné služby a práca v zahraničí.
