In 1963 the ruin was declared a national cultural monument, at a time when it was little more than overgrown rubble under the oaks — protection on paper long before anyone did any work on it. Meanwhile the chemical works at Strážske was discharging PCBs — polychlorinated biphenyls, industrial oils that do not break down — into the Laborec, and the river carried them down into the new reservoir. From the 1970s the pollution damaged both the water and the lake's reputation as a holiday coast, and the clean-up and the arguments about what is safe are still going on today. It is one of the heaviest industrial legacies in eastern Slovakia, and it sits in the view from the castle.V roku 1963 vyhlásili zrúcaninu za národnú kultúrnu pamiatku — v čase, keď to bola len zarastená kopa kameňa pod dubmi; ochrana na papieri prišla dávno pred akoukoľvek prácou. Medzitým vypúšťal chemický závod v Strážskom do Laborca PCB — polychlórované bifenyly, priemyselné oleje, ktoré sa v prírode nerozkladajú — a rieka ich zaniesla do novej nádrže. Od sedemdesiatych rokov znečistenie poškodilo vodu aj povesť jazera ako letnej riviéry a čistenie i spory o to, čo je ešte bezpečné, pokračujú dodnes. Je to jedna z najťažších priemyselných záťaží na východnom Slovensku — a leží presne vo výhľade z hradu.
