In 1466 the castle was badly damaged in fighting during the reign of Matthias Corvinus; Slovak accounts connect it with his long quarrel with the Polish king Casimir IV, whose family had a claim on the Hungarian throne. Eastern Slovakia had only just come out of twenty years under Ján Jiskra's Czech garrisons, and the country was full of soldiers with no war to fight and no other trade. Whoever held the hill, it was the village below that paid for the siege.
