In the early 1500s the owners repaired and strengthened the castle — gunpowder had changed what a wall was expected to survive, and thin medieval curtain walls were being backed with earth and rounded bastions all over the kingdom. In 1594 imperial troops damaged it again while taking it. The date falls inside the Long Turkish War, so the story is easy to get wrong: this was the emperor's own army, not the sultan's, and the short record does not say what the quarrel was about. Ottoman raiding parties did reach Zemplín in these decades, but they never held this hill.Na začiatku 16. storočia majitelia hrad opravili a zosilnili — pušný prach zmenil to, čo mal múr vydržať, a tenké stredoveké hradby vystužovali zemou a okrúhlymi baštami po celom kráľovstve. V roku 1594 hrad znovu poškodilo cisárske vojsko, keď ho dobýjalo. Dátum spadá do pätnásťročnej vojny s Osmanmi, a preto sa príbeh ľahko poplietne: bolo to vojsko cisára, nie sultána, a stručný záznam nehovorí, o čo v tom spore išlo. Osmanské nájazdy do Zemplína v týchto desaťročiach naozaj dosahovali, tento kopec však nikdy nedržali.
