The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov
Vinné CastleViniansky hrad
On 11 April 1241 the Mongols destroyed the Hungarian royal army at Muhi, out in the plain a day's ride to the south, and King Béla IV fled to the Adriatic coast. When the invaders withdrew a year later he drew the obvious lesson: earth banks and timber palisades had failed everywhere, while the handful of stone castles had mostly held. Viniansky hrad is one of the castles built in the decades that followed, in the second half of the thirteenth century, set on its hill to watch the road running north towards Poland. This is the single most common mistake told about Slovak castles: the great majority were not destroyed by the Mongols — they exist because of them.
