History of Betliar ManorDejiny — Betliarsky kaštieľ

Betliar is a kaštieľ — a country manor, not a fortress — and it is the other half of the Andrássy arrangement in Gemer. The family's strength sat on the rock at Krásna Hôrka; their comfort, their books and their souvenirs sat here, on flat ground beside the village, in a landscape park with ponds and follies. What makes the house nationally important is what did not happen to it. In 1945, when almost every Slovak manor was emptied and its contents scattered, Betliar kept its own furniture, pictures, trophies and library, which is why a visitor today walks through a real nineteenth-century interior instead of a reconstruction.Betliar je kaštieľ — vidiecke šľachtické sídlo, nie pevnosť — a je druhou polovicou andrášiovského usporiadania v Gemeri. Sila rodu sedela na brale Krásnej Hôrky; pohodlie, knihy a suveníry sedeli tu, v rovine vedľa dediny, v krajinárskom parku s rybníkmi a romantickými stavbami. Celoštátne dôležitým robí dom to, čo sa mu nestalo. V roku 1945, keď takmer každý slovenský kaštieľ vyprázdnili a jeho zariadenie sa rozkotúľalo, si Betliar udržal vlastný nábytok, obrazy, trofeje aj knižnicu — a preto dnes návštevník prechádza skutočným interiérom devätnásteho storočia, nie jeho rekonštrukciou.

  1. 1330 · the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries1330 · štrnáste a pätnáste storočie A mining village with a fortified house in itBanícka dedina a v nej opevnený dom

Betliar is first named in writing in 1330, as Bethler, and appears to have been founded at the end of the thirteenth century as a mining settlement in the Slaná valley. Its lords were the Bebeks, the same family that held Krásna Hôrka, in the branch seated at Štítnik. On the flat ground beside the village there stood a fortified noble house. Sources describe it differently — one calls the core of the present building a fifteenth-century manor raised on a Bebek castle, another says the baroque house was built on the foundations of a Renaissance one — and the disagreement is honest rather than careless, because each rebuilding covered the older work over.

  2. 1557 · the later sixteenth century1557 · druhá polovica 16. storočia Paying the sultan, and belonging to the castlePlatiť sultánovi a patriť hradu

In the second half of the sixteenth century Betliar became an appurtenance of Krásna Hôrka: the manor and its village were administered from the castle above the neighbouring valley. A Hungarian account records that from 1557 the place was paying tax to the Ottomans. That detail is worth stopping on, because it is the real texture of the frontier — a village could lie inside the Kingdom of Hungary, be garrisoned by the king's side, and still pay the sultan's collectors to be left alone. Paying both sides was cheaper than being burned by one of them.V druhej polovici šestnásteho storočia sa Betliar stal príslušenstvom Krásnej Hôrky: kaštieľ aj dedinu spravovali z hradu nad susednou dolinou.

  3. 1676 · 17131676 · 1713 The Andrássys take the manorKaštieľ preberajú Andrášiovci

The Andrássys had come into Gemer in the sixteenth century, when the founder of the family was granted Krásna Hôrka and its estates. Late in the seventeenth century the family divided into branches, and Štefan Andrássy, made a baron in 1676, took Betliar and founded the branch named after it. A Hungarian account puts the formal grant of the Betliar estate and manor to Baron Pavol Andrássy in 1713; the two dates probably mark different steps of the same transfer, and this page does not pretend to settle it. From here on the pattern is fixed for two hundred and thirty years: the fortress on the rock and the house on the flat, one family, one estate.Andrášiovci prišli do Gemera v šestnástom storočí, keď zakladateľ rodu dostal Krásnu Hôrku a jej panstvo. Maďarský prameň kladie formálne udelenie betliarskeho panstva a kaštieľa barónovi Pavlovi Andrášimu do roku 1713; obidva roky pravdepodobne označujú rôzne kroky toho istého prevodu a táto stránka si nenárokuje spor rozhodnúť.

In the early eighteenth century Štefan Andrássy built the manor as a multi-storey and still fortified house with four corner towers, and after 1710 it was remodelled at the same time as his brother's Krásna Hôrka. The money came out of the hills behind it: by 1781 Betliar had an iron smelting works and two hammer forges, water-driven hammers that beat raw iron into bar, and charcoal from the surrounding forests fed them. In 1792–1795 the house was enlarged and the family began laying out an English landscape park around it — a garden built to look like untouched nature and costing as much as architecture. In 1793 Leopold Andrássy founded the library, which explains the family better than any portrait in the house does.

The park got its showpiece in 1823, when Josef Bergmann designed the Roman waterfall — nine metres high, the first Romantic garden structure in Slovakia and still the tallest artificial waterfall in the country. Then the revolution of 1848–1849 swept up the two brothers who would shape this house. Emanuel Andrássy, born 1821, and Július (Gyula) Andrássy, born 1823 at Vlachovo a few kilometres up this same valley, both fought against the Habsburgs; after the defeat Gyula was condemned to death in his absence and hanged in effigy on 21 September 1851 while he lived in London and Paris, and Emanuel went abroad too. Emanuel travelled through India, Ceylon, Java, Bengal and China and published a book about it in 1853. The trophies, weapons and curiosities that crowd Betliar's walls are, to a large extent, the luggage of that exile.Park dostal svoju ozdobu v roku 1823, keď Josef Bergmann navrhol Rímsky vodopád — deväť metrov vysoký, prvú romantickú záhradnú stavbu na Slovensku a dodnes najvyšší umelý vodopád v krajine. Potom revolúcia rokov 1848 – 1849 strhla dvoch bratov, ktorí tento dom sformovali. Emanuel Andráši, narodený 1821, a Július Andráši, narodený 1823 vo Vlachove pár kilometrov vyššie v tej istej doline, bojovali proti Habsburgovcom; po porážke odsúdili Júliusa v neprítomnosti na smrť a 21. septembra 1851 ho obesili in effigie, teda symbolicky, kým žil v Londýne a Paríži, a do cudziny odišiel aj Emanuel. Emanuel precestoval Indiu, Cejlón, Jávu, Bengálsko a Čínu a v roku 1853 o tom vydal knihu.

Július Andrássy came home in 1858, and nine years later he was running the country: on 17 February 1867 he became the first prime minister of Hungary under the Austro-Hungarian Compromise, and from 1871 to 1879 he was foreign minister of the whole Habsburg monarchy. His elder brother Emanuel stayed in Gemer and ran iron — he chaired the association of Upper Hungarian ironmasters and was nicknamed the iron count. Between 1880 and 1886 Emanuel remade Betliar into the building you see: a storey added, tall French roofs, dormers and a tower, and the interiors arranged around the collections. It is worth holding both facts at once — the foreign minister of a great power and these furnished Gemer rooms come from the same family and the same iron money.Július Andráši sa vrátil domov v roku 1858 a o deväť rokov riadil krajinu: 17. februára 1867 sa stal prvým predsedom uhorskej vlády po rakúsko-uhorskom vyrovnaní a v rokoch 1871 – 1879 bol ministrom zahraničných vecí celej monarchie. Jeho starší brat Emanuel zostal v Gemeri a robil železo — predsedal spolku hornouhorských železiarov a prezývali ho železný gróf. V rokoch 1880 – 1886 pretvoril Emanuel Betliar do podoby, ktorú vidíme: pribudlo poschodie, vysoké francúzske strechy, vikiere a veža, a interiéry usporiadali okolo zbierok.

  7. 1918 – 1920 · and the last two owners1918 – 1920 · a poslední dvaja majitelia A magnate house inside a republicMagnátsky dom v republike

In 1918 Austria-Hungary broke up and Betliar found itself in Czechoslovakia, confirmed by the Treaty of Trianon in 1920. The family kept the house through the interwar republic: Gejza Andrássy (1856–1938), politician and businessman, and after him Emanuel Andrássy the younger (1892–1953), the last owner. Everything around them changed. There was a new state with a land reform aimed squarely at estates of this size, a Gemer iron industry that had lost the imperial market it grew up serving, and an aristocracy whose titles the republic no longer recognised. The house went on being lived in, and it went on accumulating, which is the only reason there was anything left to save in 1945.V roku 1918 sa Rakúsko-Uhorsko rozpadlo a Betliar sa ocitol v Česko-Slovensku, čo potvrdila Trianonská zmluva v roku 1920. Rod si dom udržal cez celú medzivojnovú republiku: Gejza Andráši (1856 – 1938), politik a podnikateľ, a po ňom Emanuel Andráši mladší (1892 – 1953), posledný majiteľ.

The border drawn in November 1938 ran through Rožňava, five kilometres down the valley, so Rožňava went to Hungary and Betliar stayed inside the wartime Slovak State. In August 1944 the Slovak National Uprising broke out and partisan groups worked the Ore Mountains behind the manor with help from the villages; Ján Miklóšik of Betliar took part in the Uprising. The front came through in January 1945, Rožňava falling on 23 January, and in 1945 the estate passed to the state and the Andrássys were gone.Hranica vytýčená v novembri 1938 viedla cez Rožňavu päť kilometrov nižšie v doline, takže Rožňava pripadla Maďarsku a Betliar zostal v Slovenskom štáte.

Nineteen forty-five ended the aristocratic estate in Czechoslovakia. All over the country manor houses were taken over, their owners gone and their contents carted off, sold cheaply, stored badly or simply lost; whole interiors disappeared within a few years. Betliar is the great exception, and the reason is administrative rather than romantic: the house was taken under monument protection and its contents were treated as belonging to the building rather than as movable property to be redistributed, so it became a museum with its own furniture still standing in it. In 1978 the park was entered on the international list of significant historic gardens, and in 1985 the whole complex was declared a national cultural monument.

Betliar today is a museum of the Slovak National Museum, and the interiors are seen on a guided tour rather than wandered freely — that restriction is the price of keeping the contents where they belong. The library runs to something like twenty thousand volumes, one Slovak source counting fifteen thousand of them as foreign-language works, and it is still shelved in its own purpose-built room. Beside it are the hunting trophies and the travel collections, including the mummified body of an Egyptian man, and around the house lie roughly eighty hectares of park with ponds, imported specimen trees, a grotto and the Roman waterfall, which a local civic association restored in October 2016. While Krásna Hôrka stays shut, this is the half of the Andrássy story a visitor can still walk through.
