The House That Was Never EmptiedKaštieľ, ktorý nikto nevypratal
Nineteen forty-five was the end of the aristocratic estate in Czechoslovakia. Across the country, manor houses were taken over, their owners gone, and their contents scattered — carted off, sold, stored badly, lost. Whole interiors vanished in a few years. Betliar is the great exception, and the reason is almost banal: the house was placed under monument protection early, and its contents were treated as belonging to the building rather than as movable property to be redistributed.Rok tisícdeväťstoštyridsaťpäť znamenal koniec šľachtických panstiev v Československu. Po celej krajine boli kaštiele prevzaté, ich majitelia odišli a zariadenie sa rozptýlilo — odviezlo, rozpredalo, zle uskladnilo, stratilo. Celé interiéry zmizli v priebehu pár rokov. Betliar je veľkou výnimkou a dôvod je takmer banálny: dom bol včas zaradený medzi chránené pamiatky a jeho obsah sa začal chápať ako súčasť budovy, nie ako hnuteľný majetok na prerozdelenie.

The result is that a visitor today walks through something rarer than an old building: an intact nineteenth-century way of living, in the rooms it was lived in. There is no reconstruction to see through, no borrowed furniture standing in for the real thing. It also explains why the tours are guided and the rooms are not free to wander — the fabric being protected here is not the walls.Výsledkom je, že dnešný návštevník prechádza niečím vzácnejším než starou budovou: neporušeným spôsobom života devätnásteho storočia, a to v izbách, v ktorých sa naozaj žil. Niet tu rekonštrukcie, cez ktorú by bolo treba vidieť, ani požičaného nábytku zastupujúceho ten pravý. Vysvetľuje to aj to, prečo sú prehliadky lektorované a prečo sa po izbách nedá voľne chodiť — chránenou podstatou tu nie sú múry.
