The Andrássys had come into Gemer in the sixteenth century, when the founder of the family was granted Krásna Hôrka and its estates. Late in the seventeenth century the family divided into branches, and Štefan Andrássy, made a baron in 1676, took Betliar and founded the branch named after it. A Hungarian account puts the formal grant of the Betliar estate and manor to Baron Pavol Andrássy in 1713; the two dates probably mark different steps of the same transfer, and this page does not pretend to settle it. From here on the pattern is fixed for two hundred and thirty years: the fortress on the rock and the house on the flat, one family, one estate.Andrášiovci prišli do Gemera v šestnástom storočí, keď zakladateľ rodu dostal Krásnu Hôrku a jej panstvo.
