Július Andrássy came home in 1858, and nine years later he was running the country: on 17 February 1867 he became the first prime minister of Hungary under the Austro-Hungarian Compromise, and from 1871 to 1879 he was foreign minister of the whole Habsburg monarchy. His elder brother Emanuel stayed in Gemer and ran iron — he chaired the association of Upper Hungarian ironmasters and was nicknamed the iron count. Between 1880 and 1886 Emanuel remade Betliar into the building you see: a storey added, tall French roofs, dormers and a tower, and the interiors arranged around the collections. Jeho starší brat Emanuel zostal v Gemeri a robil železo — predsedal spolku hornouhorských železiarov a prezývali ho železný gróf. V rokoch 1880 – 1886 pretvoril Emanuel Betliar do podoby, ktorú vidíme: pribudlo poschodie, vysoké francúzske strechy, vikiere a veža, a interiéry usporiadali okolo zbierok.
