Betliar is first named in writing in 1330, as Bethler, and appears to have been founded at the end of the thirteenth century as a mining settlement in the Slaná valley. Its lords were the Bebeks, the same family that held Krásna Hôrka, in the branch seated at Štítnik. On the flat ground beside the village there stood a fortified noble house. Sources describe it differently — one calls the core of the present building a fifteenth-century manor raised on a Bebek castle, another says the baroque house was built on the foundations of a Renaissance one — and the disagreement is honest rather than careless, because each rebuilding covered the older work over.Betliar je prvý raz písomne doložený v roku 1330 ako Bethler a vznikol podľa všetkého na konci trinásteho storočia ako banícka osada v doline Slanej.
