In the second half of the sixteenth century Betliar became an appurtenance of Krásna Hôrka: the manor and its village were administered from the castle above the neighbouring valley. A Hungarian account records that from 1557 the place was paying tax to the Ottomans. That detail is worth stopping on, because it is the real texture of the frontier — a village could lie inside the Kingdom of Hungary, be garrisoned by the king's side, and still pay the sultan's collectors to be left alone. Paying both sides was cheaper than being burned by one of them.V druhej polovici šestnásteho storočia sa Betliar stal príslušenstvom Krásnej Hôrky: kaštieľ aj dedinu spravovali z hradu nad susednou dolinou. Maďarský prameň uvádza, že od roku 1557 tu platili daň Osmanom. Pri tom sa oplatí zastaviť, lebo taká bola skutočná látka pohraničia — dedina mohla ležať v Uhorskom kráľovstve, mať posádku kráľovskej strany a napriek tomu platiť sultánovým výbercom za pokoj. Platiť obom stranám vyšlo lacnejšie, než dať sa od jednej z nich vypáliť.
