The town's own history puts a possible forerunner of Modra in the ninth century, in the time of Great Moravia — the Slavic state that ruled this country before the Hungarians arrived, and the first place where Christianity was preached here in a Slavic language. Nothing survives above ground to prove it, and Modra itself offers the claim as likely rather than certain. What is certain is that the ground was good: a slope facing south at the foot of the hills, springs, forest above and open land below.
