The Slovak National Uprising began on 29 August 1944, with its centre at Banská Bystrica in the middle of the country; German forces occupied Slovakia to crush it and shot their prisoners into mass graves at Kremnička and Nemecká. Modra lies a long way west of all that and stayed under the regime's control to the end. The front reached this corner in the spring of 1945, when the Soviet 2nd Ukrainian Front swung around the Little Carpathians in the Bratislava–Brno offensive; Bratislava fell on the evening of 4 April 1945 and Modra was taken in the same first days of the month. Afterwards the town's German-speaking families — evacuated ahead of the front or expelled behind it under the post-war decrees — disappeared from a town they had helped build since the thirteenth century.Slovenské národné povstanie sa začalo 29. augusta 1944 a jeho stredobodom bola Banská Bystrica v strede krajiny; nemecké jednotky obsadili Slovensko, aby ho potlačili, a zajatcov strieľali do masových hrobov v Kremničke a v Nemeckej.
