The Ottoman army destroyed the Hungarian one at Mohács in 1526, and over the century that followed raiding parties came far enough north for the towns under the Little Carpathians to think seriously about defending themselves. Modra climbed the ladder in two steps: Maximilian II gave it the rights of a free market town in 1569, and in 1607 Rudolf II raised it to a free royal town, answerable to the king alone — forty years before Pezinok and Svätý Jur managed the same. Between 1610 and 1647 it built a wall with three gates around the single long street of its centre. One of them, the Upper Gate, still stands at the end of that street.Osmanské vojsko rozdrvilo v roku 1526 pri Moháči uhorské a počas nasledujúceho storočia sa turecké výpady dostávali dosť ďaleko na sever na to, aby mestá pod Malými Karpatmi začali vážne myslieť na obranu. Modra stúpala po rebríčku v dvoch krokoch: v roku 1569 jej Maximilián II. udelil výsady slobodného mestečka a v roku 1607 ju Rudolf II. povýšil na slobodné kráľovské mesto, podriadené už len kráľovi — o štyridsať rokov skôr, než sa to podarilo Pezinku a Svätému Juru. V rokoch 1610 – 1647 si okolo svojej jedinej dlhej ulice postavila hradby s tromi bránami. Jedna z nich, Horná brána, stojí na konci tej ulice dodnes.
