History of PonikyDejiny — Poniky

One room in this village is worth the journey: the inside of its little Gothic church, painted wall to wall in 1415 and saved by being covered with limewash for centuries. The rest of Poniky's history is what happened around that room — a raid in 1678 that carried off most of the population, an ironworks in the woods, and a school that in 1944 was first a hospital and then a prison.

The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov

  1. 1282 and 12841282 a 1284 A king gives away land he cannot hunt inKráľ daruje pôdu, na ktorej sa nedá poľovať

Poniky appears in writing in 1282 as Ponik, and again in 1284 as Ponyk. The name probably comes from an old verb meaning to water — these hills have springs that vanish underground and come up again somewhere else. On 27 July 1284 King Ladislaus IV granted the territory to a nobleman, Master Filip, on the grounds that it was of no use to the crown for hunting or fishing. This is the generation after the Mongol invasion of 1241, when kings were handing out land they could not use themselves in order to get it settled, cleared and defended.

  2. 1310 and 13581310 a 1358 A chapel, two mills and a little goldKaplnka, dva mlyny a trochu zlata

In 1310 the archbishop gave permission to build a chapel here, dedicated to St John, and that chapel is the seed of the parish church. By 1358 the records mention two mills and gold in the village's ground; gold was worked here on a small scale until 1571. None of this made Poniky rich — this is estate and forest country of Zvolen county, farmed and grazed rather than mined — but it does explain how a village of no great size could afford, fifty years later, to have its church painted.

  3. 14151415 The year the walls were paintedRok, keď vymaľovali steny

In 1415 a painter — or a workshop; who it was is still argued over — covered the sanctuary and part of the nave with a scheme of scenes and figures: the life of Christ, ranks of saints under painted architecture, St George and the dragon. This is the courtly style of the years around 1400, executed in a small village church in the hills, and nothing about the plain outside of the building prepares you for it. Painting a village church from floor to vault was normal practice across central Europe then. What is not normal is that this one survives nearly whole, when almost everywhere else only fragments do.V roku 1415 pokryl maliar — alebo dielňa; kto to bol, sa dodnes sporí — svätyňu a časť lode výjavmi a postavami: život Krista, rady svätcov pod maľovanou architektúrou, svätý Juraj s drakom.

  4. 14241424 A daughter village in the woodsDcérska osada v lesoch

In 1424 a second settlement is named: Kysponik, later Ponická Lehôtka, little Poniky. It was made by clearing forest, and the word lehota in a Slovak village name means exactly what it meant to the settlers — a run of years free of dues, offered to persuade people to take on hard ground. Villages with that word in their name are scattered all over Slovakia and every one of them tells the same story. Ponická Lehôtka stayed a separate place until it was merged into Poniky in 1886.Roku 1424 sa objavuje druhá osada: Kysponik, neskôr Ponická Lehôtka, teda malé Poniky. Vznikla klčovaním lesa a slovo lehota v názve slovenskej dediny znamená presne to, čo znamenalo osadníkom — roky odpustených dávok, ktorými sa mali dať prehovoriť, aby si vzali ťažkú pôdu. Ponická Lehôtka zostala samostatná až do roku 1886, keď ju pripojili k Ponikám.

  5. 1512 and 15261512 a 1526 A new altarpiece for the painted churchNový oltár do vymaľovaného kostola

The church was given a late Gothic winged altarpiece in 1512 and a stone font in 1526. These are the last two decades before everything changed: Luther's Reformation began in 1517, and in 1526 the Hungarian army was destroyed by the Ottomans at Mohács and the kingdom broke apart. The village fitting out its church in those years had no idea what was coming. Both pieces survive, which is unusual — most Slovak parish churches lost their medieval furnishings to fire, war or fashion.Kostol dostal v roku 1512 neskorogotický krídlový oltár a v roku 1526 kamennú krstiteľnicu.

  6. 15781578 Paying two mastersPlatiť dvom pánom

After the Ottomans pushed north, Poniky in 1578 was paying tribute to them — the levy that villages in the borderland handed over to avoid being raided. It did not stop paying its taxes to the Hungarian side either. That is the ordinary condition of a village in the Ottoman century: too far from any fortress to be protected, close enough to be reached, and taxed twice for the privilege. The Ottoman army never held this country. Nájazdovým oddielom to nebolo treba.

  7. 1605 and 16631605 a 1663 Soldiers, and then fireVojaci a potom oheň

In 1605 the troops of Stephen Bocskai, leading the first of the great anti-Habsburg risings, plundered the village — proof that a Hungarian army could do as much damage here as an Ottoman one. In 1663 the Ottomans took the fortress of Nové Zámky and their raiding reached deep into these valleys; Poniky was attacked from four directions, the church burned, and the village's older written records burned with it. That fire is why parts of this village's history now have to be reconstructed out of other people's documents.V roku 1605 vydrancovali obec vojská Štefana Bocskaia, vodcu prvého z veľkých protihabsburských povstaní — dôkaz, že uhorské vojsko tu vedelo narobiť rovnakú škodu ako osmanské.

  8. 6 January 16786. januára 1678 The day the village was carried awayDeň, keď dedinu odvliekli

The worst day in the village's recorded history is 6 January 1678, in the middle of the Thököly uprising, when raiders — recorded here as Turks — killed 23 householders and carried off 239 children and 81 adults, 34 men and 22 women. Only 46 of them are recorded as ever coming back. Read that again: not a battle, not a siege — a village emptied of its children on a January morning. A tax assessment in 1696 still found the fields lying fallow, and it took decades before the place was a working village again.Najhorší deň v zapísaných dejinách obce je 6. január 1678, uprostred Tököliho povstania, keď nájazdníci — miestne záznamy hovoria o Turkoch — zabili 23 hospodárov a odvliekli 239 detí a 81 dospelých, z toho 34 mužov a 22 žien. Späť sa podľa záznamov vrátilo iba 46 z nich. Prečítajte si to ešte raz: nie bitka, nie obliehanie — dedina, z ktorej v januárové ráno zmizli deti. Súpis z roku 1696 nachádza polia ešte stále ležať úhorom a trvalo desaťročia, kým sa z toho miesta znova stala fungujúca obec.

  9. 1709, 1718 and 17841709, 1718 a 1784 Whose church, and a furnace in the woodsČí je kostol — a pec v lesoch

The church changed hands between Lutherans and Catholics several times during the religious wars and was finally kept by the Roman Catholic side in 1709. Seventy-five years later Emperor Joseph II's Patent of Toleration let Protestants build again, with conditions — no tower, no door onto the street — and the village's Lutherans put up a tolerance church in 1784, adding the bell tower only in 1868, once that was allowed. Meanwhile a third settlement appears: Ponická Huta, first documented in 1718 as the Poniky blast furnace, an ironworks placed where the ore, the charcoal and the water were. A bigger furnace was built there in 1780.Kostol počas náboženských vojen niekoľkokrát menil majiteľa medzi luteránmi a katolíkmi a napokon ho v roku 1709 udržala katolícka strana. O sedemdesiatpäť rokov neskôr dovolil tolerančný patent cisára Jozefa II. evanjelikom znova stavať — s podmienkami: bez veže a bez vchodu z ulice — a tunajší evanjelici si v roku 1784 postavili tolerančný kostol; zvonicu k nemu pridali až v roku 1868, keď to už bolo možné. Medzitým pribudla tretia osada: Ponická Huta, prvý raz doložená roku 1718 ako ponická vysoká pec, teda železiareň postavená tam, kde bola ruda, drevené uhlie a voda. Väčšiu pec tam postavili v roku 1780.

  10. 1848 and 18551848 a 1855 Serfdom ends; steam arrivesKoniec poddanstva, príchod pary

The revolution of 1848 abolished serfdom in the Kingdom of Hungary. Villagers stopped owing labour and dues to a landlord, which mattered enormously in law and rather less in the kitchen, because most families were left with holdings too small to live on. Industry was the other option, and here it was close by: a steam-powered sawmill started at Ponická Huta in 1855 and ran for more than a century, until 1970. A village of three parts with an ironworks and a sawmill in one of them is not the picture most people have of a Slovak mountain village, but it is what this one was.

  11. 1868–18861868 – 1886 Three villages, one parish, and the boat to AmericaTri dediny, jedna farnosť a loď do Ameriky

Under Austria-Hungary the three settlements went their own administrative ways: Ponická Huta became an independent municipality in 1871, while Ponická Lehôtka was merged into Poniky in 1886. The Lutheran bell tower went up in 1868. These were also the decades of mass emigration: from the 1880s hundreds of thousands of people left these mountains for the United States, most of them from villages exactly like this one, with too many children and too little land. Some came back with money. Many did not come back. Boli to zároveň desaťročia masového vysťahovalectva: od osemdesiatych rokov 19. storočia odišli z týchto hôr do Spojených štátov státisíce ľudí, väčšinou z dedín presne takýchto — s priveľa deťmi a primálo pôdou. Niektorí sa vrátili s peniazmi. Mnohí sa nevrátili.

  12. 1918–19431918 – 1943 The republic, and the schoolRepublika a škola

Poniky became part of Czechoslovakia in 1918. The interwar republic built schools in villages that had never had one worth the name, and the new school building at Poniky is about to matter far more than anyone who built it could have guessed. Ponická Huta stayed a separate municipality until 1943, when it was joined back to Poniky. The poet Štefan Žáry (1918–2007), one of the Slovak surrealists, belongs to this village and to this generation.Poniky sa v roku 1918 stali súčasťou Československa. Medzivojnová republika stavala školy v dedinách, ktoré poriadnu školu nikdy nemali, a nová školská budova v Ponikách bude o chvíľu znamenať oveľa viac, než si ktokoľvek z jej staviteľov vedel predstaviť. Ponická Huta zostala samostatnou obcou do roku 1943, keď ju znova pripojili k Ponikám. K tejto obci a k tejto generácii patrí básnik Štefan Žáry (1918 – 2007), jeden zo slovenských surrealistov.

The Slovak State proclaimed in March 1939 was a client of Nazi Germany. On 29 August 1944 the Slovak National Uprising broke out with its capital at Banská Bystrica, and this village went into it: on 6 September 1944 more than 125 Poniky men were mobilised into the insurgent army, and twelve men and one woman joined partisan units. The new school building was turned into a field hospital for the wounded. For two months the insurgents held much of central Slovakia.Slovenský štát vyhlásený v marci 1939 bol klientom nacistického Nemecka. 29. augusta 1944 vypuklo Slovenské národné povstanie so strediskom v Banskej Bystrici a táto obec doň vstúpila: 6. septembra 1944 narukovalo do povstaleckej armády vyše 125 ponických mužov a dvanásti muži a jedna žena sa pridali k partizánom.

Artillery began falling on Poniky on 11 March 1945 and the shelling went on for twelve days. On 23 March Soviet reconnaissance units and troops of the Romanian army — Romania had changed sides in August 1944, and its soldiers fought their way across Slovakia — took the village. Sixty-four soldiers were killed in the fighting around it. Banská Bystrica was taken two days later. The village has a monument to the Romanian dead, which is not something most people expect to find in the hills above the Zvolen basin.11. marca 1945 začali na Poniky dopadať delostrelecké granáty a ostreľovanie trvalo dvanásť dní.

  15. 1948–19891948 – 1989 The paintings come back out from under the limewashMaľby sa vracajú spod vápna

Later centuries had limewashed the medieval interior over, and it was restoration work in the twentieth century that brought the 1415 surface back into daylight. That is the usual story of medieval painting in this region: what stayed on view is generally what did not last, and what survived is what somebody once painted over. Meanwhile the land was collectivised into a cooperative farm, the sawmill at Ponická Huta ran until 1970, and people commuted down to work in Banská Bystrica and Zvolen. The church stayed an ordinary parish church throughout, which is why it has no monument staff today. Medzitým pôdu združstevnili, píla v Ponickej Hute bežala do roku 1970 a ľudia dochádzali za prácou dolu do Banskej Bystrice a do Zvolena.

  16. since 1993od roku 1993 Fifteen hundred people and a keyPätnásťsto ľudí a jeden kľúč

Poniky had 1,544 inhabitants at the end of 2025, spread through its three parts along the brook, with farming still a real employer. The church is in ordinary parish use and normally locked; getting in means arranging it through the parish or the village office and finding the person with the key, not buying a ticket. Ask for light when you do — the windows are small and much of the value is in surface that a phone torch will not reach. The costume and the lace are kept up for the village's own occasions, a feast day or a wedding, and are not staged for visitors.
