After 1989 the works was privatised and, in the 1990s, the old smelting technology was replaced. That is the single most important thing that has happened to the town's environment: the air and the soil of the basin have been recovering ever since, and the forests on the surrounding hills with them. It is a rare case where a Slovak industrial town can point to a measurable improvement rather than a promise.Po roku 1989 závod sprivatizovali a v deväťdesiatych rokoch nahradili starú technológiu tavenia. Je to najdôležitejšia vec, aká sa v meste z hľadiska životného prostredia stala: vzduch aj pôda v kotline sa odvtedy zotavujú a s nimi aj lesy na okolitých kopcoch. Je to zriedkavý prípad, keď slovenské priemyselné mesto môže ukázať merateľné zlepšenie, a nie len sľub.
