In the Slovak National Uprising the town was a defended point on the insurgent front line: heavy fighting ran here from 23 September to 5 October 1944 as German forces pushed up the Hron. The town paid for it — some 260 houses burned, in the October fighting and again during the German occupation in March 1945. Soviet and Romanian troops liberated the town on 1 April 1945. Almost nothing of the old Svätý Kríž survived the combination of that fire and what came after it.Počas Slovenského národného povstania bolo mesto braneným bodom povstaleckej frontovej línie: od 23. septembra do 5. októbra 1944 sa tu tvrdo bojovalo, ako nemecké jednotky postupovali hore Pohroním. Mesto to zaplatilo — zhorelo približne 260 domov, v októbrových bojoch a potom znova počas nemeckej okupácie v marci 1945. Sovietske a rumunské vojská mesto oslobodili 1. apríla 1945. Zo starého Svätého Kríža neprežilo takmer nič — najprv oheň, potom to, čo prišlo po ňom.
